NEW STUDENT INFORMATION
Welcome to Garden of the Heart Yoga Center

If you are brand new to yoga, the class to start with is Yoga 1 or Gentle Yoga 1. Our sessions begin every 7 weeks and you may enroll through the 3rd week of each session. We also offer a Gentle/Restorative class that new students can take at any time. See Class Information and Descriptions or Class Schedule for more details.

If you are an experienced yoga student you may enroll for a session or do drop-in classes at the appropriate level. Refer to Class Information and Descriptions for any prerequisites.

Wear comfortable clothes: t-shirts, shorts, tights, or leggings. Please do not wear baggy pants as they prevent us from observing your leg alignment. Leave cell phones, gum, shoes and your worries at the door! Do not eat for 2-3 hours before class, and please do not wear heavy jewelry or strong fragrances to class. All yoga props are supplied.

Be sure to ask us about our free trial class for new students! If you have any questions at all, please give us a call at 941-341-9781 or email us at info@GardenOfTheHeartYoga.com.

CLASS INFORMATION & DESCRIPTIONS
Students receive much greater benefit from yoga when they make a commitment and attend class regularly. As a result GOH offers yoga in sessions of 7 classes, so that the information can be presented progressively and sequentially. You may begin in any 7-week session, and progress through the course levels at your own pace. If you miss the beginning of the session, you may enroll through the 3rd week of the session. After that time we request that you wait until the next 7-week session to begin.

If you are an experienced yoga student you may do drop-in classes in the appropriate level class, rather than registering for the 7-week session. See the Drop-In Classes section for more information.

We have two types of progressively taught classes: the regular series for most students and the gentle series for the student who would like a more slowly paced class. In addition, we have several specialty classes that are described below. These class descriptions will assist you with your class selection. Please note that the higher level classes have pre-requisites in order to register. Call the yoga center if you have questions about the most appropriate class for you.

REGULAR CLASS SERIES DESCRIPTIONS
YOGA 1/INTRODUCTION TO YOGA is the class for students new to yoga. It focuses on poses to strengthen and stretch the legs, back, and shoulders. Emphasis is on the basic alignment of the standing poses, breathing techniques, and relaxation.

YOGA 1-2/EXPERIENCED BEGINNER is a continuation class for Yoga 1. The emphasis is on refining and building endurance in Yoga 1 and Yoga 2 standing poses. Basic Anusara alignment principles are presented. This class is suitable for students who have practiced other styles of yoga, but not for those who have never studied yoga.

YOGA 2/CONTINUING focuses on refining the standing poses, learning basic sitting poses, back bends, and shoulder stand using the Anusara Yoga principles of alignment. It is recommended that students complete Yoga 1 and two sessions of Yoga 1-2 before taking Yoga 2.

YOGA 2-3 continues with Yoga 2 poses and adds the fundamentals of handstand and headstand. Students strengthen arms and shoulders as they develop proficiency in techniques leading to these postures. Students should complete at least 3 sessions of Yoga 2 before taking Yoga 2-3.

YOGA 3/INTERMEDIATE introduces more challenging standing poses, back bends, and seated poses. Also handstand, headstand, and forearm balance are included. Regular practice outside of class is strongly encouraged.

YOGA 4/ADVANCED is for students who are capable of holding a freestanding headstand, can kick unassisted into handstand at the wall, and can push up to Upward Facing Bow with straight arms. Regular practice outside class is expected. Permission of the instructor is required.
GENTLE SERIES CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
GENTLE/RESTORATIVE YOGA includes gentle stretches, breathing, and restorative poses, as well as simple movements to increase range of motion of the major joints. It is ideal for students with chronic symptoms such as muscle/joint pain, stiffness, weakness, or fatigue. Students must have the ability to get up and down from the floor.

GENTLE YOGA 1, YOGA 1-2, YOGA 2, AND YOGA 2-3: Gentle Yoga Classes follow the program of regular classes of the same level but at a slower pace and with a range of modifications to make the poses progressively more accessible. Sun salutations are replaced by gentle flows.
SPECIALTY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
PILATES-YOGA FUSION Experience the benefits of a pilates and yoga combination class. This class focuses on the abdominal muscles crucial to supporting a healthy back. Basic yoga and pilates postures will be progressively seamed together to strengthen your “core” as well as challenge all muscle groups in new ways. A mixed-level practice open to experienced yogis level 1-2 and higher.

PARENT/CHILD YOGA is a 30 minute class for kids age 2-4 years and their caregivers. Yoga helps children develop balance, coordination, concentration, and strength. Yoga helps parents stretch, tone, strengthen, and bond with their kids! No experience necessary, just bring your sense of adventure and a pillow or cushion.

MOVING INTO MEDITATION Join Kimberly for a rejuvenating new option for the whole of YOU. Each class begins with concentrated breath practices and body stretching targeted to increase the health of your immune, nervous and circulatory systems, and to dissolve stress and toxins in your body. Then each session climaxes with a different style of meditation sure to increase your peace, joy and sense of self-empowerment. You will walk away with new tools and increased confidence for your wellbeing.

RISE & SHINE YOGA is a one hour led yoga practice guided with inspiration and technical insights to awaken all participants to the magnificence of a new day. Appropriate for Yoga 2 students and higher with no major injuries.

MORNING MEDITATION Anchor your day and your self in a joy releasing practice of breath and meditation. Beginning with breathwork and leading directly into meditation, you will tap your natural ability to be positive, open, and clear in the moment and throughout your day. Strengthen your 'meditation muscle,' so the practice becomes second nature. The sessions will offer several types of breath exercises and meditation.

YOGA FOR GOLFERS The philosophy and practice of Anusara yoga add immeasurably to a golfers game and experience on the golf course. The yoga poses teach strength, flexibility and balance. Yogic breathing provides a skill to relax and focus the body in preparation for the golf swing. This is particularly useful during competitive play. Learning how to focus one's mind helps develop the consistency needed to score well. The material in these classes is designed for those who have golf skills, play regularly, and have an established handicap. No previous yoga experience is necessary.
